Kristina Haugland, Assistant Curator of Textiles at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is our speaker on this intriguing topic. Since the fourteenth century, when fashion cycles began in Europe, each era has developed a group aesthetic that reflects prevailing artistic and social ideals. What is considered beautiful and accepted as the desired and "natural" body is dependent on this particular aesthetic, which influences everything from great art to erotic fantasies. This illustrated talk discusses the evolution of these ideals, which have encompassed amazing changes such as that from curvaceous hourglass figure of the Victorians to today's emaciated supermodels.

Ute Arnold, MFA, is a holistic Body-Psychotherapist, artist, author, and co-founder of a newly-forming self-sustainable EcoVillage. Ute will demonstrate and discuss how Holism affects well-being on personal levels and then radiates into the EcoVillage and the larger community. Her work focuses on the integration of body, mind, emotions, spirit, creativity, and the Healing Forces of Nature.

In recognition of Black History Month actor, scholar and educator Dr. Daisy Century will portray the women's rights activist and abolitionist Sojourner Truth. Dr. Century brings to life a woman undeterred by incredible obstacles that included rape, slavery and beatings. This powerful performance will explore the twin goals of racial and gender parity espoused by Sojourner, as she traveled the country in the mid-19th century preaching about the intertwined causes of abolition and women's rights.

Think you know your fellow Kalmia members? Tonight's speakers will surprise you: One is an international philanthropist, one is a world traveler, a third took a germ of an idea and, in addition to her regular job, "works" as a fundraiser helping others, and our fourth is a secret drama enthusiast who now leads groups of friends to learn more about Broadway plays. Monthly meetings aren't always long enough to get to know new members and vice versa. So come discover the secret passions of these four Kalmia members who took a step off the normal career path. They will entertain you; they may inspire you to explore new worlds of your own.

In 2009, Kate Winslow and photographer Guy Ambrosino spent almost a year in Italy working at the famed Anna Tasca Lanza School of Sicilian Cooking. As Kate cooked with the school's owner, Guy spent his days roving the estate documenting the family's age-old farming and preserving processes. From that life-changing experience came a cookbook, "Coming Home to Sicily: Seasonal Harvests and Cooking," written by Kate and Fabrizia Lanza with photographs by Guy. Upon their return to the States, the couple settled in Lambertville and continue to work together on various cookbook and food-related projects. They will share their experiences as well as some traditional Sicilian dishes featured in the book.
