Ms. Stephanie E. Spencer, Director of The Printmaking Council of New Jersey

October 13, 2003

Ever wonder how a print is made? Unlike paintings which clearly display the hand of the artist with each brush stroke, prints don't reveal the materials used to create the image. Ms. Stephanie E. Spencer, Director of The Printmaking Council of New Jersey, will speak about printmaking techniques and the formation of the Council. Learn about this creative center that promotes interaction among artists through exhibitions and education, especially through the Roving Press education program that provides on-site arts education to schools and organizations throughout the state.

Judge Ann Reynolds Bartlett

March 8, 2004

Click here for information about the Child Placement Review Board

After seeing and hearing Judge Ann R. Bartlett in Small Claims Court at the Flemington County Courthouse, our President, Sue Cleary, thought that she would be a very interesting woman to have speak at the Kalmia Club. The Honorable Ann R. Bartlett was sworn in as a Superior Court Judge on July 27, 2001. She sits in Hunterdon County and is currently assigned to the Criminal Division as well as Special Civil Part. She also handles the Domestic Violence Contempt and Children-In-Court calendars.

  • Child Placement Review (CPR) is a legislatively mandated judicial volunteer program in the Family Division. Boards are comprised of court-appointed citizen volunteers who monitor the cases of all children who are placed outside their homes by the Division of Youth and Family Services.

Review Board members monitor the timeliness of case movement, examine case plans, and conduct in-person interviews of involved parties in order to provide judges with recommendations to assist in the critical decision-making process. (Boards are mandated to assess each case from the point of view of the best interest of the child.) The Board's recommendations embrace issues such as how the case is managed and how quickly the child achieves permanency. Review Board members are required to complete mandatory program-specific training.

How do I become a volunteer?

To begin the process, you must submit an application to your local volunteer liaison.

Do I have to volunteer in the County where I live?

Certain programs do have local residency requirements. For further information see the program descriptions or contact your local volunteer liaison.

What training is required for me to participate?

Every volunteer must complete a 4-6 hour generic orientation. It is a four-part training that includes an overview of the court system, problem solving techniques, communication skills and cultural diversity.

What kind of commitment do you expect from me?

Your appointment as a judicial volunteer is usually a one to three year term, depending on the program you select. Many of our programs offer flexible scheduling; day, evening, even weekend opportunities exist.

What will I gain from my experience?

Through your volunteer work with the courts, you will be making a difference in your community and contributing to the mission of the judiciary. You will gain the knowledge, experience and understanding of the inner workings of the court system while enhancing your professional development.

Stars and the Party Girl with Shannon Burd

April 12, 2004

This program is not what you might think. Shannon Burd, apart from being a doula, ballerina, wife and mother of 2 girls whom she homeschools, is an (amateur) astronomer. She will be sharing some of the basics of astronomy plus current goings-on in the heavens. Additionally, Shannon will discuss an extraordinary female astronomer, Caroline Herschel — sister to famed astronomer, William Herschel. Important in her own right, Caroline (b. 1748 d. 1848) was a fun-loving woman who also contributed greatly to the science of astronomy. In fact, she was the first woman to discover a comet.
